If Jesus Is Our Firstborn

In a recent survey of the Folio Society, members named The Bible as the most important book of all time. The good news of this survey is that the Bible garnered the leading 37% of the votes. While this was good news, the news in total is quite mixed at best. In second place, garnering 35% of the votes was Darwin’s “On The Origin of Species.” That is a very close second place. And, 37% is a pretty weak first place. This means that 63% of those surveyed believed that the Bible is not the most important book. And, 35% believed that Darwin’s book was more important than the Bible. This result is sad, but entirely expected. This survey might also explain why so many even in the Church are trying so desperately to make these two books harmonize with each other. After all, wouldn’t it be nice if the two most important books of all time agreed with each other? The problem, however, is that they don’t. In fact, isn’t a book that calls into question the identity of man, the identity/power/integrity of God, and the Bible’s veracity, a book that is primarily opposed to the Bible? In that light, isn't the attempt towards harmony a fool's errand?

This blog has posted on numerous occasions regarding the faulty science, faulty philosophy and faulty logic behind Darwin’s most famous "theory." But, what about the faulty spirituality of Darwin’s work? After all, since the Bible is first a spiritual book, and we are trying to harmonize another book with it, shouldn’t that other book harmonize with the Bible spiritually first if they are to harmonize at all? Since God is spirit and our true identity as man is spirit it is spirituality that is the ultimate defining quality of all things. Spirituality is the core defining attribute of the entire universe. What anything says or implies spiritually is what defines it in God’s eyes. And, what God defines of anything is that thing’s only definition. After all, God gets the final and only say on what something is and is not. And, while this blog has posted many times on this subject, such posts have come with surprising private criticism from those in the Church. But, is such criticism spiritually grounded?

Allow me to answer that by way of a series of questions: If death entered all creation through Adam, the most evolved man we know of, did the evolutionary ancestors of Adam not die? If man evolved from lesser forms (which requires death), for what reason did those lesser forms have to suffer death? If Jesus is the "firstborn" of all creation, and we were created in His "image" from "the beginning," but the creation account is twisted as figurative language disguising the truth of macroevolution, why then was Jesus (our firstborn) not born in the form of the first beings? Would God, who explicitly revealed in the Bible some of the most amazingly deep truths of science, deceive us about creation only for us to find later that He lied? Was God incapable of describing evolution? Did God lie to us or did those who are truly guilty of lies, lie to us? If Jesus came to take on our flesh like us, and He was the first Adam and the firstborn of all creation, doesn’t it only make sense that Adam was the first created, un-evolved being, just like Jesus?

In truth, those in the Church who advocate for this quasi-paganizing of Genesis are arguing from flesh, not spirit. They are making human arguments and not letting scripture speak for itself. They are superimposing their opinion of scripture void of actually citing it. This distortion inevitably results in the wholesale modification of scripture to suit man’s tastes as opposed to the proper inverse. After all, if we would just let scripture speak, here are some samples of what it actually says:

  • Genesis 1:26-28 says, “Then God said, ‘Let us make man in our image, after our likeness. And let them have dominion over the fish of the sea and over the birds of the heavens and over the livestock and over all the earth and over every creeping thing that creeps on the earth. So God created man in his own image, in the image of God he created him; male and female he created them. And God blessed them. And God said to them, ‘Be fruitful and multiply and fill the earth and subdue it, and have dominion over the fish of the sea and over the birds of the heavens and over every living thing that moves on the earth.’”
  • In Mark 10:6, even Jesus repeats Himself from Genesis, "But from the beginning of creation, ‘God made them male and female.’"
  • Colossians 1:15-20 says of Jesus, “He is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn of all creation. For by him all things were created, in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or rulers or authorities—all things were created through him and for him. And he is before all things, and in him all things hold together. And he is the head of the body, the church. He is the beginning, the firstborn from the dead, that in everything he might be preeminent. For in him all the fullness of God was pleased to dwell, and through him to reconcile to himself all things, whether on earth or in heaven, making peace by the blood of his cross.”
  • 1 Corinthians 15:20-22 says, “But in fact Christ has been raised from the dead, the firstfruits of those who have fallen asleep. For as by a man came death, by a man has come also the resurrection of the dead. For as in Adam all die, so also in Christ shall all be made alive.”
  • 1 Corinthians 15:45-49 says, “Thus it is written, ‘The first man Adam became a living being’; the last Adam became a life-giving spirit. But it is not the spiritual that is first but the natural, and then the spiritual. The first man was from the earth, a man of dust; the second man is from heaven. As was the man of dust, so also are those who are of the dust, and as is the man of heaven, so also are those who are of heaven. Just as we have borne the image of the man of dust, we shall also bear the image of the man of heaven.”

And, in reference to this last passage, the travesty of those in the Church that paganize Genesis is that they are doing the opposite of what this scripture implores. This passage commands us to move from the flesh towards the spirit, not argue that our spiritual book is inaccurate in favor of our flesh. It is only as we move from the corruptible towards the incorruptible that we trend towards our royal identity and eternity. The Bible is not glorified through evolution. Rather, evolution reduces the Bible to something much less relevant to our eternity and identity – even less relevant than say Darwin’s grossly errant book.

Christian, Jesus created you in His image from the beginning. And, as the firstborn of all creation, Jesus was born in Bethlehem in our fleshly image in order to rescue us from our corrupted flesh. This pre-existent, first Adam, Jesus, defines who we are and who we are not. Dismiss all voices from whatever source they come which call into question these truths about our identities. Such voices are regurgitations of the growing whispers and shouts of His enemy. These voices do and will continue to outnumber the voices of truth. But, they will never surpass truth’s power. This is yet another reason why every thought you have must be daily subjected to God’s word where each thought is either affirmed as worthy or denied as unworthy. As a follower of God, on this matter you must have no other resolve.

Abortion Opposition Now Illegal

There is a famous yet unsubstantiated story about a naval ship losing its bearings off the coast of Canada (it at least belongs in the ranks of urban legend). As the story goes, the ship was a member of the US Naval fleet that had lost its bearings due to an electric storm. They saw what seemed to be another ship headed on a collision course with them. The captain of the Navy ship contacted the other party (Canadians) on the radio and proceeded to have the following conversation:
  • Americans: Please divert your course 15 degrees to the North to avoid a Collision.
  • Canadians: Recommend you divert YOUR course 15 degrees to the South to avoid a collision.
  • Americans: This is the Captain of a US Navy ship. I say again, divert YOUR course.
  • Canadians: No. I say again, you divert YOUR course.
  • Americans: This is the aircraft carrier USS Lincoln, the second largest ship in the United States' Atlantic fleet. We are accompanied by three destroyers, three cruisers and numerous support vessels. I demand that YOU change your course 15 degrees north, that's one five degrees north, or countermeasures will be undertaken to ensure the safety of this ship.
  • Canadians: This is a lighthouse. Your call
This funny story illustrates what can happen when even a sophisticated naval ship loses its bearings. A ship losing its bearings like this can be funny, however potentially dangerous. And, this reminds me of a more dangerous example of a proverbial ship that has lost its bearings today. That ship is America, and she is on a collision course with a wrathful and almighty God that, like a lighthouse, will not move.

For example, effective August 22, 2014, the state of California’s Department of Managed Health Care ordered all insurance plans to immediately begin covering elective abortion. By the way, “elective abortion” is not Plan B or contraception. Elective abortion is the surgical dismemberment of a baby while in the womb, including up to full term (and on demand). Churches all across California received notices that they will be forced into covering elective abortions (in violation of their consciences). It is bad enough to force Catholic churches to pay for contraception in violation of their consciences. Now all churches in California are being required to pay for the murder of unborn babies. In summary, California churches must fund murder or else. Is anyone truly surprised?

This glaring hypocrisy of the American left was birthed by the famous case of Roe v. Wade. In the days during and following, Christians were mocked and lectured to by the leftist elite who were baptized in the hedonism of the 1960s, followed by a rise to powerful positions that determine the course of public education even today. They lectured us that we can’t legislate morality while they marched down the hypocritical path of shoving their morality down our throats. And, with every decade since we have attempted to put wise limitations on this evil only to be personally trashed as sexist haters of women by the likes of those who declare themselves "tolerant." Then came Obamacare, passed fraudulently, with all verbal assurances that we will never force taxpayers to pay for abortions. And, in four short years the deceptions (a.k.a. lies) have given birth to a culture marked by death of innocent children paid for by you and me against our will. And, as we lift up our Constitutional cries for religious freedom (the first of true civil rights and liberties) we are now accused of waging a war on women.

With that backdrop, we have some questions for the devout left. Who is legislating morality now (or rather immorality)? Who is advocating now for the killing of unborn females against their wills? Who is guilty of the worst brand of sexism (a brand that is forced)? Who now preaches that it is immoral to oppose abortion and that we must punish those (even churches) who dare to freely express their religious opposition? Which is more immoral, to kill babies or to oppose the practice? Which should be punished, the killing of babies or peacefully attempting to prevent it? What is wrong with America for her to lose her bearings so badly that we would punish a church for refusing to pay for murdering babies? America, have you lost your mind? Yes, America is worshiping a god of upside down morality. She is sacrificing her children on an altar that sails on a collision course with a Rock that will break her into pieces.

On that point, the Bible has its own proverbial examples of collision courses with The Rock. 2 Samuel 22:32 says, “For who is God, but the Lord? And who is a rock, except our God?” Deuteronomy 32:4 says, “The Rock, his work is perfect, for all his ways are justice. A God of faithfulness and without iniquity, just and upright is he.” And, in Matthew 21:42-44 Jesus says, “Jesus said to them, ‘Have you never read in the Scriptures: ‘The stone that the builders rejected has become the cornerstone; this was the Lord's doing, and it is marvelous in our eyes’? Therefore I tell you, the kingdom of God will be taken away from you and given to a people producing its fruits. And the one who falls on this stone will be broken to pieces; and when it falls on anyone, it will crush him.’” If history is a good teacher, it is not difficult to see that this collision course will not end well for the USS America. There has never been a nation who made the killing of children sacred, that ultimately prospered. Every such kingdom has fallen without exception, and in spectacular fashion. But, there is still hope in a better Kingdom.

Christian, I will close with the immortal words of encouragement from Jesus Christ, our God, Lord and King: “Do not fear those who kill the body but cannot kill the soul. Rather fear him who can destroy both soul and body in hell.” “What I tell you in the dark, say in the light, and what you hear whispered, proclaim on the housetops.” “You will be hated by all for my name's sake. But the one who endures to the end will be saved.” “I have said these things to you, that in me you may have peace. In the world you will have tribulation. But take heart; I have overcome the world.” “Now when these things begin to take place, straighten up and raise your heads, because your redemption is drawing near.”

The Pope Fails Again

The mark of true humans is that they fail, often. In contrast, the mark of the true God is that He never fails, ever. Therefore, it is entirely appropriate for the infallible God to declare man to be fallible. And, it is entirely inappropriate for the opposite to be declared by man. After all, for a man to declare God to have failed is in and of itself yet another human failure.

In spite of these obvious truths, the Catholic Church continues to hold as dogma that the Pope is infallible. However, as yet another piece of evidence to the contrary, last month, Pope Francis failed in his address to the Pontifical Academy of the Sciences. In that speech, he made the following false statements: “When we read about Creation in Genesis, we run the risk of imagining God was a magician, with a magic wand able to do everything — but that is not so. He created human beings and let them develop according to the internal laws that he gave to each one so they would reach their fulfillment. He gave autonomy to the beings of the universe at the same time at which he assured them of his continuous presence, giving being to every reality, and so creation continued for centuries and centuries, millennia and millennia, until it became which we know today, precisely because God is not a demiurge or a magician, but the creator who gives being to all things. God is not a divine being or a magician, but the Creator who brought everything to life. Evolution in nature is not inconsistent with the notion of creation, because evolution requires the creation of beings that evolve.” That quote is a failure on almost every level.

If we had an audience with Pope Francis, and he were willing to discuss these declarations with us, we might consider respectfully asking some tough questions. According to what authority are you making such claims? How can you prove your claims to be true? Where in the Bible does it ever teach that God is anything other than divine? Bible aside, if “God is not a divine being,” then who is? If God is not divine, why are you serving Him as if He is? When you say “God is not a divine being,” and the Bible clearly disagrees with you, what does that say about what you declared? Since when has secular science ever conceded that "evolution requires the creation" as you suggested? In an effort to represent both sides haven’t you failed to faithfully represent either?

Clearly, as did his predecessors, the Pope is trying to reconcile the creation of the universe by God as clearly outlined in the Bible, with the arrogant declarations of unsubstantiated opinions held by the vast majority of secular scientists. But, these two positions do not reconcile as they are mutually exclusive. Either the clear account of the Bible is wrong or the Godless declarations of scientists are wrong. In an attempt to try to reconcile that which is irreconcilable, the Pope bowed in favor of the Godless and against the truth of the divine God. Said another way, in order to reconcile between the Rock and a hard place, the Pope removed the Rock. That was a very bad decision or failure.

This was a failed decision both because he stood in opposition to the very identity of God, and because it is a decision that is founded upon extremely poor logic. God is divine by nature. In fact, the Dictionary definition of “divine” is “God.” Therefore, the Pope is declaring that God is not God. In a very real sense, the Pope is attempting to preside over the definition of God, which makes the Pope declare himself as more supreme than God. The main problem is that God never delegated that role to him. In fact, the Pope embraces the concept that Popes are infallible while declaring that God spoke in error. At very least, the Pope is declaring himself more supreme than the Bible, God’s Word. There is no way in which the Pope’s declarations end well for him or for those who embrace them.

The second reason this was a failure on his part is due to poor logic. In order to reconcile the irreconcilable, he falsely removed God’s divinity or God’s nature. In doing so, he is declaring that it requires divinity to create modern humans and that God lacks divinity. In other words, the Pope’s argument is that since he believes God is not divine, then God could not have done that which requires divinity. However, since he is declaring that it takes something divine to result in modern humans, then what divine entity actually achieved this result? Is random chance more divine than the God of the Bible? The anti-biblical side which he defends, however, in its strictest form denies the divine. Therefore, how is it even possible for modern humans to exist? Using the Pope’s human logic, modern humans require a divine cause. But, he declared that God is not divine. Then, why/how are there modern humans today? Is there some other divine agent of evolution that we don’t know about? Or is this just another epic failure by another fallible man?

The Apostle John (among others) testified to the divinity of Jesus Himself in John 1:1-5, “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was in the beginning with God. All things were made through him, and without him was not any thing made that was made. In him was life, and the life was the light of men. The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it.” The irony of this passage with regards to this discussion is that it is referring to the divinity of Jesus (God) in how he created everything in the universe, including Adam and Eve. And, by the way, Adam and Eve in their original state were actually more advanced than you and I. In a very real sense we are experiencing devolution not evolution.

There are more passages of scripture where that came from. Romans 1:20 says, “For his invisible attributes, namely, his eternal power and divine nature, have been clearly perceived, ever since the creation of the world, in the things that have been made. So they are without excuse.” And, 2 Peter 1:3-4 says, “His divine power has granted to us all things that pertain to life and godliness, through the knowledge of him who called us to his own glory and excellence, by which he has granted to us his precious and very great promises, so that through them you may become partakers of the divine nature, having escaped from the corruption that is in the world because of sinful desire.” The Bible clearly states what the Pope foolishly attempts to discredit.

The primary reason that such foolishness is uttered by the likes of fallible men, is that we have worshiped men (like the Pope) for so long, that we have to that extent forgotten what God (the only One worthy of worship) looks like. We have made men the object of our worship for so long, that we have humanized the very notion of who God is. We have worshiped this man (the Pope) for so long, that we have reduced God to someone who is submissive to our foolish, human declarations. But, the truth is that man is man and God is God, and there is nothing in-between. Man is entirely not divine while God is the only being that is divine. Creating Adam and Eve did not require “magic” or a “wand.” All it required was the Word of the divine God to be spoken. His Word is that powerful. God is divine because that is God’s nature. There is only one shade or level of divine - God. God is fully divine and all else is fully not. God is without failure while every man (including the Pope) is drowning in it.

Christian, please see through and beyond the empty words of men and gaze in worship only upon the words of the divine God. And, when a man, no matter who he is, claims to speak for God in opposition to God’s word, what that man declares must be ignored and dismissed as foolish, lest God returns the disfavor. For God’s sake, filter your speech and actions as if God is God and you are not.
