Signs of The Times?

There have been several eras in human history where those in the Church felt that the end times that were prophesied in the Bible were near. Examples included the rapid rise of the Roman Empire and even the events leading up to World War II. Such misguided readings of those events have led many to ridicule such doomsday prophets and the brand of Christianity that they represented. Ironically, today Christians are far outnumbered in the arena of doomsday prophecy. Those decrying the Earth’s impending doom are more dominated by climate prophets than any other group. In fact, atheists far outnumber doomsday prophets of any other stripe. Regardless of which stripe a prophet bears, all doomsday prophets point to signs around them to back up their claims. For some, the signs are manipulated climate models. For the Christian, the signs are much more obvious. Instead of having to create models to create prophecy, we have been given ancient prophecies that we can tangibly compare to current events.

How do the current events of today compare with the signs outlined in the Bible that point to the coming end of time? Well, before looking to scripture, below are a list of headlines that are dominating our news today:

  • Christians beheaded in genocide
  • Israel attacked while its thinning allies turn
  • Ebola virus death toll mounts
  • Riots in the streets across the globe
  • Record droughts, earthquakes, storms and tsunamis
  • Millions of unborn babies murdered
  • Our largest economies on the brink of bankruptcy
  • Wars on almost every continent

The headlines are growing. The signs are increasing. The warning lights are blinking more rapidly than any other time that I can remember. We were warned of this. It was prophesied by Daniel, Jesus, Paul, Peter, John, etc. We were told what is about to happen. And, we were told what to do when and as these events unfold. Compare the list of headlines above with the following scriptures and ask yourself if the signs were ever more clear and aligned:
  • Daniel 9:24-27
  • Daniel 12:4
  • Joel 2:28-32
  • Matthew 24:1-51
  • Mark 13:32
  • Luke 21:1-38
  • Romans 13:11
  • 2 Thessalonians 2:3-4
  • 1 Timothy 4:1
  • 2 Timothy 3:1-17
  • 2 Peter 3:3-4
  • 1 John 2:18
  • Revelation 1:3
  • Revelation 3:3
  • Revelation 7:14
  • Revelation 13:1-18
Take these signs seriously. Realize that the end is ever nearer. Therefore, our time left is growing shorter. When our King returns (and He will), will He find us loving others as He loved us? Will He find us reconciling others to God by way of His gospel? Will He find us faithful to His parting commands? Will He find us faithful at all? Will He find you faithful?

Jesus said in Matthew 16:2-3, “When it is evening, you say, ‘It will be fair weather, for the sky is red.’ And in the morning, ‘It will be stormy today, for the sky is red and threatening.’ You know how to interpret the appearance of the sky, but you cannot interpret the signs of the times.” Like the rising of the sun, we can see its light before we can see the actual sunrise. Like that pre-sunrise glow, these signs are not the end but they point to what is coming. The good news if you are reading this is that there is still time. There is still time to share the love of Jesus with those in desperate need of it. There is still time to love at least one more person. God will place people before you today who need His love before their time runs out.

For God so loved the world that He gave His one and only Son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish but have eternal life.
